June 8, 2003 Outtakes
June 8, 2003 was composed for the 12k compilation CD Two Point
Two (12K1026, 2003). The piece was constructed entirely from sounds originally
created by other artists on the CD (including Richard Chartier, Cheason, Taylor
Deupree, Ken'ichi Itoi, Komet, Motion, Ghislain Poirier, Sawako, and Sogar),
who kindly shared their work as raw material for the sound design of the piece.
The large-scale structure of each of my compositions is determined by chance
procedures, and, inevitably, there are elements composed for each piece that
do not end up in the final composition. It’s not always the case that
these outtakes are of lesser quality; sometimes they are very interesting moments
that simply prove impossible to integrate into the narrative structure, and
this was certainly the case with much of the material left out of June 8, 2003.
I’m therefore pleased to present here seven previously-unpublished fragments
that were written for June 8, 2003, but not utilized in the final composition.
Together with the published version of the piece (available on my website as
well as on the 12k CD), they represent all of the material originally composed
for the project.
