8 sound works is a compilation cdr curated and organized by Ben Owen on behalf of the NY Society for Acoustic Ecology. The artists assembled on this disc took part in a live radio broadcast event called Tune(outside))) that was organized by transmission arts organization free103point9 on July 4, 2005. Broadcast locally from free103's "Wave Farm" in Acra, NY, the broadcast was also streamed over the web to an international audience.

the cdr has work from ea, andy graydon, mpld, michelle nagai and mike hallenbeck, andrea polli, ben owen, vatic, and edmund mooney. design by mpld.

The artists presented here were invited to contribute to an "outdoor sounds" radio broadcast. This audio became one of four live, simultaneously broadcast micro-radio stations set up at Wave Farm. Those listening on site were free to wander the area with portable headsets and tune into any one of the four live broadcasts. Web listeners could choose between four different thematic streams of audio, including the "outdoor sounds" channel.

the liner notes for 8 Sound Works include a firsthand account of the Tune(outside))) event written by participant Andy Graydon and a brief excerpt of a conversation on acoustic ecology that took place with members of NYSAE during a residency at Wave Farm in October 2005. the disc was mastered by Derek Morton at Kavekavity.

the cdr is a benefit for the New York Society of Acoustic Ecology. they are $10, mailed for $11 domestic usa, and $14 rest of world. payment can be made below.

ea is a photo-electro-acoustic project instigated by Gill Arno (b, italy), Richard Garet (b, uruguay), André Gonçalves (b, portugal), Andy Graydon (b, hawaii, usa), Ben Owen (b, usa), and Gil Sanson (b, venezuela). While the interests and approaches of each participant vary widely, everyone generally works within the idiom of computer-processed natural and instrumental sounds, and with the interrelation of the visual environment with the aural environment through slide, film, and video projections. The group’s involvement is open and evolving, always incorporating new forms and dividing into smaller focused specialties. EA works with improvisations as well as with rules-based scores written by individual participants. Performances alternate between large group improvisations and practiced scores drawn from the group’s repertoire, often played by smaller units of the group. In keeping with this evolving paradigm, the acronym EA does not refer to any fixed phrase
andy graydon is a film and video maker and sound artist based in New York City. His work focuses on the problems and potentials in the interaction of sound and image. Taking the form of videos, live video mixes, sound works, music and movement performances, and installations, this work explores the boundary zones between performance and exhibition, liveness and mediation, presence and deferral.
mpld is Gill Arnò's mixed media performance/installation and publishing project.
Born in Milan (Italy), Gill studied art and typography before moving to NYC in 1997. Since then he has been designing record covers and art directing small record labels, as well as creating multi-dimensional environments as part of underground parties and mixed media experimental events.
The focus of mpld's exploration is on the relationships that can be established between sound, light and space, considered in their phenomenological and conceptual dimensions. Memory, territory, identity and the sense of belonging are recurring themes, approached trough the use of various found materials that are assembled combining analog empiricism with the abstraction of digital hyperreality.
michelle nagai is an electroacoustic composer, performance artist and improviser whose interdisciplinary approach utilizes a myriad of physical and aural elements in the creation of site-specific performances, radio broadcasts and installations. Ideas grounded in the theories and practices of acoustic ecology, cultural geography, Deep Listening and expressive therapy play a large role in shaping her creative activities.
mike hallenbeck is an audio artist, composer, field recordist and sound
designer based in Minneapolis USA. He adopts sounds both hither and yon, brings them home to play with each other, and helps them decide what they want to be when they grow up. His sound work was recently commissioned as part of Monika Bravo's "No_Name: Frequency+Repetition]" at El Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos in Spain. His composition "Dolphinator", composed entirely from dolphin sounds, is part of interspecies.com's "Belly of the Whale" project, based on marine recordings and featured as part of the Japan EXPO and the Berlin Liquidrom. He created sound work for the "Rock's Role: After Ryoanji" exhibition at Art In General (NYC, 2004). Hallenbeck has designed sound and composed music for over 40 theatrical productions
in the Twin Cities, including shows produced by the Guthrie Theater and
Illusion Theater. Hallenbeck releases his own "musique plastique" under
the name Archive.
